Gimmy Flowens is the solo project of Northern Rivers-based artist, Gemma Owens. You may already be familiar with Owens as the lead singer and guitarist of charismatic garage-rock quartet, The Oogars.
While this new solo adventure is bursting with the same kind of charm, there’s an added level of rawness and intimacy at play. Gemma's years performing and crafting her songwriting with The Oogars brings an instant edge to her solo endeavour. Her first single as Gimmy Flowens, ‘Away For A While’ (2020), unveiled an enchanting folk texture and softness, whereas her latest singles ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ and ‘Vulnerable’ see a bold shift in imagery and musical style.
Gimmy Flowens appears to have a chameleon approach to her music thus far but her stunning vocal delivery and lyricism is always placed firmly in the foreground.
Gemma Owens is also known for her colourful naive art, which she paints from her home studio in the Northern Rivers of NSW. For Gemma, making music and art are both important creative outlets — “my music is a more vulnerable expression of myself, whereas my paintings are quite humorous and childlike, which brings out my playful side.”
With just two singles under her belt, her colourful palette, dynamic range and outsider approach to pop songwriting is clearly leading Gimmy into exciting territory that could be likened to Aldous Harding, Angel Olsen and Julia Jacklin.
Recorded with Anthony Vallone (producer/engineer) at Wave Forms Studios, Gimmy’s debut EP ‘Trying’ is out on December 17th. ‘Trying’ is a 3-track EP featuring recent singles ‘Don’t Be Afraid’, ‘Vulnerable’ and the title track.
"A radiant burst of charismatic garage-pop that seems to have reimagined her sound, playing like a true invitation into Gimmy’s kaleidoscopic sonic world." — Trouble Juice
